Tom Brady, arguably one of the best football players of all time, finally announced his retirement on February 1, 2022. “I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady said. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

While this doesn’t sound shocking to most, football fans did not see this one coming. On an episode of the Youtube series “Tommy and Gronky,” Tom Brady was asked about playing until 50, to which he said, “I don’t find it so difficult… I think I can. I think it’s a yes.” Once Tom said this, everyone assumed that his retirement would be many years in the future. But when his retirement was finally announced, fans and players didn’t believe him. “I truly believe Tom Brady isn’t done playing football. The urge to want more, it’s going to drive him insane… I think he will relax for a few days or weeks but his mind of an ultimate competitor will soon speak to him again.” Says Titans wide receiver A.J. Brown.

Many criticized Brady’s retirement post as it didn’t address the team he spent 20 seasons and won 6 super bowl rings with, the New England Patriots. NBC Sports Boston said, “The 44-year-old thanked several members of the Bucs organization in addition to his personal trainer/business partner Alex Guerrero, his agents, Don Yee and Steve Dubin, and his family, but not Patriots owner Robert Kraft, head coach Bill Belichick, or any member of the New England organization.”

Despite the slight backlash he received, Tom Brady is still widely respected by fans and players alike. Former player and NFL Hall of Famer Warren Moon said, “Congratulations to TB12 on arguably the finest career an athlete in any sport has ever achieved! You’re leaving on top! All the best on your next journey! See you in Canton!”. New York Giants and former Patriots player Logan Ryan tweeted, “Behind the cameras, TB is the hardest worker I ever seen. The ridiculously most competitive player who set the tone every single practice. A great teammate who took time and got to know everyone on the roster & BY Far the most prepared and toughest player you ever have to play against. I saw it from both sides.” Tom Brady is an American sports icon, his dedication to football will be admired for years. His name will be forever embedded in the heart of football.
