Have you ever looked at the cover of a book to decide if you want to read it? Or just look at a cover of a movie and decide if it looks good to watch. A common saying is “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but the cover actually tells a lot about what’s inside. The cover shows a small preview that decides what will happen next. Somebody has to create that cover but how do they do it? How do they make it look so intriguing and make you want to read or watch more? Ms. Wellwood teaches a graphic design class, where you can learn how to design a cover and much more.
Graphic design is, “Basically the art of combining text and images to create a design for something that could be a poster design, into an environmental design that guides people’s eyes and where they’re supposed to go,” Ms. Wellwood.
Graphic Design can be used for designing posters, cards, environments, websites, clothing, books, magazines, movies, and flyers. Ms. Wellwood majored in graphic design in college because “I knew that if I gained skills in graphic design there’s a lot of different areas that I could go with it.” Some jobs you can have with graphic design are a teacher, artist, architect, and designer.
Ms. Wellwood also teaches a digital photography class where you learn how to take and edit all kinds of photos. She has taught for four years; two years at Highland and two years as a middle school art teacher. Learning graphic design skills is very helpful because “Basically every company needs a graphic designer to make their company function properly.” Some fun projects you can do in graphic design include combining a watercolor image with text to create a greeting card and more.
Graphic design can be a bit challenging to learn just like anything else, but once you get the hang of it it becomes super fun and easy. Some things you can learn in graphic design are organizational skills for file types, photoshop, adobe illustrator, InDesign, visual organization, and so much more. According to www.bls.gov, Graphic designers make an hourly wage of $15-$30, but it varies depending on your job. Learning graphic design could lead to great opportunities in the future!
